The charger 10 comprises a substantially cylindrical housing with respective bottom and upper parts separated by a pair of opposing recesses (12, 13, Fig. 2). In operation the housing is arranged in an upright position and the recesses (12, 13) have planar rear faces (14), 15 extending in parallel with each other and with the axis of symmetry of the housing. Spaced guiding ribs 16, 17 are provided at the upper and lower end zones of the recesses laterally to guide the cells to be inserted. Contact members (20), 21 are arranged at the upper and lower end walls of the recesses between the ribs 16, 17 to spring-bias the cells inserted. The bottom part is capable of locating a toroidal mains transformer. Slots in the bottom (not shown) of the housing and slots 22 in the rear faces (14), 15 define an airflow cooling channel.
