Glycol aldehyde and lactic acid derivatives and their sulfur analogs of the formula I <IMAGE> I where R1 to R3 have the meanings given in the specification, X is oxygen, sulfur or a single bond, and Y is a C2-C4-alkylene or C2-C4-alkenylene chain where in each case a methylene group may be substituted by an oxo group (=O), environmentally compatible salts of the compounds I, methods of preparing the compounds I, and their use as herbicides.
