Recognising obstacle in path of driverless vehicle

The obstacle detection method uses a transmitter (5) providing sound or electromagnetic waves which are reflected by an obstacle in the vehicle path and detected by a receiver (6). The transmitter and receiver have different transmission and reception ranges, an intersection range being determined from the alignment of the transmitter and receiver.A braking cycle is initiated when an object is detected within the intersection range, the braking being suppressed when the obstacle does not impair the movement of the vehicle.
