The optical waveguide is formed by inserting optical fibre bundles in a conductor sleeve which is filled with a thixotropic gel. The optical fibre bundles are fed to the injector via a rotary masking system using horizontal and vertical pins spaced to match the width and thickness of the optical fibre bundles, the latter oscillated at a low rate and fed to the injector opening at an angle of between 10 and 90 degrees.The optical fibre bundles have a length which is greater than that of the sleeve by up to 1 percent. The extrudate is subjected to a defined cooling with controlled mechanical extension.
