PURPOSE:To provide a superior gray level color image free from transfer defect wherein transfer performance of a toner image at a highlight image area is sufficiently ensured even if an intermediate transfer body is used. CONSTITUTION:A color image forming device is provided, wherein a light beam having pulse width corresponding to an image signal from a beam irradiation means 4 is applied to the photosensitive body 1 based on a beam modulation signal from a beam modulation means 3 so that each color component electrostatic latent image formed on the photosensitive body 1 by the light beam is developed according to each color component toner by means of a multicolor developing means 6 and each color component toner image is transferred once onto an intermediate transfer body 7 successively, following which the color component toner images are transferred onto a recording medium 9 at a time. A gradation correcting means 10 for variably correcting pulse width of beam modulation signal corresponding to the transfer ratio of each color component developed image for an intermediate transfer body 7 is provided in the modulation means 3.
