Vehicle headlight providing variable beams from single source - uses plates of predetermined refractive index which are movable in the vicinity of light source

The vehicle headlight (10) has a light source (11) and a parabolic mirror (12). The front of the headlight has a sealing glass (13) with a prismatic surface. A mask (14) prevents light from being projected directly forward. On either side of the light source (11) there are two plates (15a,15b) of predetermined refractive index which may be moved to cover the light source or retracted to reveal it. In the retracted position light proceeds directly to the mirror and produces a long range beam but when the light source is covered the light is diffused producing a conventional beam. ADVANTAGE - Variable beam may be produced from single light source.
