A method and apparatus are described for removing pollutants from sub-soil formations in the ground, ground water being pumped out over an extended period of time to remove, in particular, highly volatile halogenated hydrocarbons, whereby the pollutants are entrained and the ground water is purified at the surface (10) by separation of the pollutants (stripping). In order also to remove pollutants of relatively high density and pollutants which are sparingly soluble in water without problem from soil formations replenished with water, it is proposed that the water-replenished soil area to be purified is subjected to acoustic treatment with a sound transducer (5). The sound transducer (5) in this case comprises two plate-shaped elements of membrane (14) type, between which is disposed a coil (13).

|
