The lever (12), jointed to a horizontal transverse spindle (13), is pivotable in the forward direction by a collision-sensitive actuator (14), and has a component of the steering column and/or components of the pedal system (10) fixed to its free end. When a pyrotechnic cartridge (4) is ignited by an accelerometer (1), releasing the lock (2) of a spring-loaded bolt (19), the section of the steering column is propelled forward and/or the pedals (18) are pivoted away from the footwell. The pyrotechnic propelling charge can be by gas electrically ignited. ADVANTAGE - Compact system can be fitted easily without modification of existing steering columns or pedal systems.
