The invention relates to a luminescent substance, in particular for low-pressure mercury discharge lamps, which contains (SE,Eu)2O3 where SE is a rare-earth metal, especially Y, and a doping amount of samarium oxide. The content of dopant is preferably within the range between 10 and 1000 ppm and enables increases in lamp light output (luminous efficiency) of up to 3 %. The invention also relates to a process for the production of such a luminescent substance, in which the desired doping quantity of a samarium compound is added to a solution of a rare-earth metal salt before the precipitation of the mixed oxalate and before the latter is heat-treated further in a manner known per se.
