The invention relates to a tool consisting of a hard-metal or cermet basic component and a multilayer surface coating of titanium carbide, titanium carbonitride, titanium nitride, zirconium carbonitride and/or aluminium oxide on the basic component and a vapour deposition process. In order to obtain a greatest possible total thickness of up to 30 mu m and good growth rates in the individual layers, it is proposed that the surface coating be applied in several layers applied alternately by a thermal CVD process and a glow-discharge-activated CVD process (PCVD).
