Each sensor (AZ1,AZ2) contains a transmitter head (SK1,SK2) which produces an alternating magnetic field in the region of the rail head, and a receiver (EK1,EK2) which evaluates this field. The alterations produced by the wheels or the wheel rims are converted into axle counting pulses. The two sensors (AZ1,AZ2) are fitted so that they are offset to each other at a specified rail track point work at the same frequency. However, the sensors have a 90 deg. phase displacement to give mutually displaced output signals. ADVANTAGE - Simplified system using one generator only to reduce cost.
