New procedure for filtering spring water (W1), contg. solid impurities (SS) enters the upper part of a filter vessel (2) which contains a filtration material. The procedure consists of: (a) an inlet process in which the spring water and pressurised water (W4) having large quantity of gas dissolved are introduced into the upper part of the vessel in such a way that they mix with each other; (b) a flotation process in which most of the impurities adhere to the large number of gas bubbles released by the pressurised water and are carried upwards to the top of the vessel; and (c) a filtration process in which the water passes through a filtration material in the lower part of the vessel. USE/ADVANTAGE - For purifying spring or well water. The quantity of impurities deposited in the filtration material is greatly reduced. The rate of filtration can therefore be increased, the life of the filtration material is extended and back-washing of the filtration material is required less frequently. Water containing a high level of impurities can be successfully purified.
