An apparatus for docking the tails of piglets and lambs. Docking is effected by means of a hot knife, so that the blood vessels are immediately heat-sealed during docking. According to the invention, the energy used to heat the knife is supplied by a battery, the electrical circuit being made by the battery being turned by a quarter turn, and the knife sharpened on one side consisting of a strip of resistor material with cutouts (recesses) therein, so that most of the heat is produced in the centre of the knife. <IMAGE>
