In all forms of straightening unbalanced workpieces, the existing fatigue strength, or fatigue strength achieved by prior processing, of the workpiece to be straightened is impaired by the straightening operation. It is the intention of the invention to propose a straightening operation which prevents this. This is achieved by virtue of the fact that internal compressive stresses are introduced locally into the workpiece by compaction in the region of the boundary surface, the respective unbalance of the workpiece to be straightened thereby being at least reduced. The introduction of internal compressive stresses into the region of the boundary surface of the workpiece can be achieved by a localised hardening operation or roll- hardening operation. By varying the intensity of hardening or of roll- hardening, the magnitude of the straightening effect, i.e. the magnitude of unbalance and the direction of unbalance, can be influenced.
