The lid comprises a bottom section which can be placed in the open top side of a crate and has a vertical outer peripheral wall and a web plate which extends within this wall, as well as a top section which accommodates the underside of another crate and has an internal vertical peripheral wall and two horizontal peripheral walls which surround this internal peripheral wall, are located a short distance above one another and are connected to one another by a number of vertical ribs. According to the invention, the top horizontal peripheral wall of the lid is missing at least in two adjacent sides between the relevant corners of the lid. This horizontal peripheral wall will mostly be partially missing in all four sides of the lid, preferably in each case between two ribs lying on the same side of the lid.
