Mobile lifting apparatus for tuberous plants, such as sugarbeet, with take-up means to grip the tubers and pull said tubers from the soil, wherein said take-up means during operation of the apparatus are of such design as to be continuously controllable up and down in terms of location and/or direction, so that one tuber at a time can be lifted by a take-up means without thrust forces being applied. The invention also relates to a method for lifting tubers, possibly making use of the abovementioned apparatus, in which a peel section (skin section) of each tuber to be lifted is first removed, after which an observing means signals the area of each separate tuber where the peel section has been removed and thus locates the tuber, and a take-up means is controlled with reference to the data relayed by the observing means and is made to engage with said separate observed tuber.
