Forming part of the crane tackle is an upper part (1) with a ring of four hook segments (12) pivoted at the bottom on a radiused shoulder. A sliding retaining ring (15) normally holds the hook segments inwards. Attached to the load is a lower part (2) with a stepped bore (3) into which the upper part can be lowered. When the upper part enters the bore of the lower part the retaining ring (15) is left behind and the hook segments are able to swing outwards against the wall of the larger bore section (5). The load can now be raised because the hook segments seat behind the radiused shoulder (6). ADVANTAGE - Load can be handled solely by crane driver. Simple and convenient in use. Especially applicable in hazardous environments.
