The invention relates to a process for the production of alkali metal chlorate, comprising electrolysis of an electrolyte containing alkali metal chloride in an electrolyzer, and further comprising the removal of silicon impurities from the electrolyte by complex formation of the silicon impurities with iron ions and precipitation, the iron ions comprising Fe(II) ions or a mixture of Fe(II) and Fe(III) ions. The process according to the invention enables one to reduce the silicon content in a brine to such a low content that it is acceptable for chlorate production.
