Continuous prodn. of CF3COCl comprises gas-phase reaction of CF3CCl3 with CF3COOH or (CF3CO)20 in the presence of a catalyst comprising the chloride of a metal with an atomic no. of 25-30. The reaction is pref. effected at 150-350 (esp. 200-300) deg. C. and atmospheric pressure, with a contact time of 20-120 (esp. 30-60) sec. using a catalyst comprising 10-50 (esp. 25-35) wt. % FeCl3 or ZnCl2 on a fluorinated alumina or carbon support. The molar ratio of CF3CCl3 to CF3COOH or (CF3CO)20 is 1-10:1 esp. 1-6:1. USE/ADVANTAGE - CF3COCl is useful as a pharmaceutical and agrochemical intermediate. The process is suitable fr industrial operation, being simple and not producing toxic effluents.
