In the optical position measuring device, a rider (4) carrying a modulated light source (5) slides along a track (1) made of plastic which has particles of fluorescent material distributed throughout its core. An optical power meter (2) at each end of the track is wired (9) to a common signal processor (10) with a position indicator (11). The ratio of the intensities of light propagated from the travelling source to the respective ends of the track is worked out and interpreted positionally from a look-up table. ADVANTAGE - Simple device can operate with low-frequency signals of higher intensity.
