A magnetic tape cassette video recorder has a tape drive motor (40) with belt and gear transmission to the spools. A second motor (90) is mounted on a baseplate and has a worm gear (92) with pinions (91,93) and a second worm gear (94). This meshes with an actuator gear wheel (95) that is positioned between a sliding actuator plate (100) and the base. The activator plate has couplings to elements that move the tape guide carriages (24) along slotted paths to bring the tape into contact with the head drum (3). A further gear coupling moves the contact roller to engage the tape with the feed drive spindle. ADVANTAGE - Simple and compact drive system. Reduced number of components capable of being straightforwardly produced.
