An illumination system increasing resolution, sharpness, depth of field, and real time three-dimensional perception of depth for a transmitted light microscope including an objective lens (16) having an optical axis (17), wherein a plurality of separate light beams (15, 15) passing through a specimen (21) to the objective lens along paths that are oblique to the optical axis of the objective lens. Fiber optic light guides (11, 11) can be used to initiate light beams that follow the above-described paths. |
