PURPOSE:To easily obtain the subject compound useful as a raw material for surfactant, etc., under low hydrogen pressure at a low cost by hydrogenating oleic acid in the presence of a ruthenium/tin solid catalyst exhibiting high catalytic activity and stability and produced by a specific reproducible process. CONSTITUTION:The objective compound can be produced in high selectivity by hydrogenating oleic acid with H2 under a hydrogen pressure of 1-200kg/cm<2> at 50-400 deg.C using a ruthenium/tin solid catalyst prepared by using a ruthenium compound and a tin compound as essential elements, adding aluminum or silicon compound to the elements, mixing the components in an organic solvent as necessary under heating to obtain a uniform solution, adding water to the solution, stirring the mixture as necessary under heating to effect the hydrolysis of the components, drying the gel produced by using the above procedures as essential procedures and, as necessary, subjecting the dried get to calcination, reduction, etc. The above compound of aluminum or silicon is preferably alkoxide. |
