PURPOSE:To detect a residual quantity of ink in an ink tank and properly execute the operation of a recorder on the basis of the detection result when the ink tank storing an ink supplied to an ink jet recording head is moving together with the recording head. CONSTITUTION:A lower ink absence sensor 82 is provided comparatively lower position of an ink tank 57 for detecting a residual quantity of ink when the scanning of a recording head is being executed and an upper ink absence sensor 81 is provided for detecting the residual quantity of ink when the scanning is stopped. When the surface of the ink is vibrated due to the scanning of the ink tank 57, the accurate detection of the residual quantity of ink corresponding to the real residual quantity thereof is carried out.
