In a joint comprising first and second joint components e.g. flanges 1,4 having aligned axial apertures and a gasket ring 7 interposed therebetween to act as a fluid seal when compressed by bolts 10, within the gasket are a number of stress or strain responsive elements 14 equispaced around the entire periphery of the gasket, each comprising a pair of electrodes 15, 16 sandwiching a stress or strain responsive material 17, e.g. of piezoelectric type.
