The air bag system comprises an air bag, an inflator for inflating the air bag and a container holding the air bag and the inflator. It has a modular cover, which covers the air bag when deflated, andm which opens when the air bag inflates and pushes the cover forwards, towards the vehicle passenger. The cover is attached to the container so as to be movable relative to the container through a limited distance towards or away from the passenger, without opening. The modular cover is attached to the container by: first mount that fixedly attach a first side of the modular cover to the container; and second mount that attach a second side of the modular cover, opposite to the first side, to the container so as to allow relative movement between the second side of the cover and the container, through the limited distance.
