The determination of the speed of a vehicle is carried out on the basis of the highest wheel speed signal (V1) or the average speed of the rear wheels, delivered at 22 (optionally after moving at 23 and correction at 24), which is processed in a Kalman filter (25) as a function of the longitudinal acceleration signal measured ( gamma mes) and a "weight" reliability coefficient, with matching at (26) of the filter coefficients (k1, k2) as a function of the braking index ( gamma mes) and of the "weight" reliability signal. It is thus possible to reconstruct a reference speed (Vref) as close as possible to the actual speed of the vehicle, with a view in particular to executing correct braking.
