摘要 Decontaminating aq. sludges by removing anaerobically formed gaseous and/or liq. harmful substances by microbiological oxidn., where the microbiological oxidn. is carried out in a boundary layer at the surface of the sludge in a water filled or water swept carrier body for the microorganisms consisting of a network structure of horizontally and vertically perfusable channels, having a ratio of surface area upon which microorganisms can grow to basal area of 2:1 to 10:1, esp. 3:1 to 5:1 and a vertical perfusion height of 1-10 cm. USE/ADVANTAGE - The process removes hazardous, harmful, unpleasant smelling and/or toxic gaseous and/or liq. substances such as H2S, sulphides, mercaptans, methane, higher hydrocarbons such as toluene, etc., formed by reductive reactions under anaerobic conditions in aq. sludges such as aq. effluent sludges from the cellulose industry contg. lignin derivs., cellulose and sulphur cpds. The process is carried out at the surface of the stagnant sludge using a water filled perfusion body carrying microorganisms which cause microbiological oxidn. of the contaminants. Using a perfusion body with the claimed perfusion height ensures virtually complete oxidn. of the harmful substances and prevents release of toxic and unpleasant smelling substances into the environment.
