Method and system for the control and containment of ground emanating gasses

A method of retaining a fluid within a part of a porous body by creating a barrier of pressurising fluid at a pressure greater than that of the fluid to be retained within the body. The fluid to be retained may be a ground-emanating gas and the porous body a predetermined region of ground. The method is performed by introducing a barrier gas into the ground at a pressure greater than that of the retained gas to form a gas barrier in a region surrounding or at least partly surrounding the region containing the retained gas and defining the interface between the barrier region and the region containing the retained gas by a plurality of gas-escape channels. Apparatus for retaining a fluid within a given part of a porous body by creating a barrier of pressurising fluid at a pressure greater than that of the fluid to be retained within the body is also described.
