Treatment of rice plants or rice growth materials (esp. seeds) against insect attack comprises applying 1-(2,6-dichloro-4-trifluoromethyl-phenyl)- 3-cyano-4- trifluoromethylsulphinyl-5-amino-pyrazole (I). Also claimed are insecticidal compsns. for the treatment, contg. (I) a carrier and opt. a surfactant, growth of rice plants using (I) pretreatment and rice plants, growth materials or seeds contg. (I), pref. at 3-100 (pref. 6.2-25) g/q. USE/ADVANTAGE - (I) is an insecticide, effective against e.g. Chilo spp., (stem borers), Nilparvata lugens (plant hoppers) and Lissorhoptrus oryzophilus. It is also active against other pests e.g. Hydrellia philippina and the nematode Aphelencoides besseyi. By planting (I)-treated rice seeds, effective long-term protection of rice plants is obtd., without the water pollution problems associated with applying insecticides to paddy fields. Specifically rice plants are protected from at least 1 month (esp. at least 2 months) after planting, without any other insecticidal treatment.
