Process for the prodn. of colour and odour stable quaternised fatty acid triethanolamine ester salts (esterquats) of formula (I) wherein R1CO=6-22C acyl residue, R2 and R3 independently=H or R1CO, R4=1-4C alkyl or a (CH2CH2O)qH gp., m+n+p=0 or 1-12, q=1-12 and X=halide, alkyl sulphate or alkylphosphate, is claimed. The process comprises (a) esterifying fatty acids (II) with triethanolamine (III) in the presence of hypophosphorous acid (IV), (b) treating the esterification prod. with peroxide cpds. (V) and alkali boranates (VI) and (c) conducting the quaternisation in the presence of phenol derivs. (VII) and hydroxycarboxylic acids (VIII) as stabilisers. USE/ADVANTAGE - The (I) are cationic surfactants with excellent reviving and brightening action and high ecotoxicological acceptability, useful as components in washing and rinsing agents, cleaning compsns., restoratives, and hair and body care prods. (I) made by the claimed process have a light colour, have excellent storage properties and do not darken or develop unpleasant odours on keeping.
