Ignition timing controller for internal combustion engine - retards and advances ignition according to whether or not knocking is detected

The ignition timing controller has a knock detection arrangement which retards the ignition timing when knocking occurs and advances it when there is no knocking. Data related to two timings corresp. to different combustion characteristics and engine operating states are held in a memory. A timing change between the two timings is derived from the outputs of the knock detection system and advance-retard arrangement. The restoring rate at which a correction is performed is greater when the timing is more rather than less retarded than the later of the two timings. USE/ADVANTAGE - For controlling timing of ic engine, esp. for engine which can use fuel mixtures with different octane ratings. Eliminates retarding corrections caused by faulty detection of knocking.
