PURPOSE:To automatically detect the position or direction of a shield machine by means of a simple equipment. CONSTITUTION:An automatic tracking type distance and angle measuring device 4 having a rotary light detecting mirror 3 arranged thereto so as to be rotated on the plane parallel to the rear end surface of a shield machine and capable of continuously measuring the position coordinates of the light detecting mirror 3 while automatically tracking the mirror 3 and capable of calculating its arrangement coordinates is arranged to the rear end surface of the shield machine 1.
