The water wheel (1) is placed in a fast moving or falling stream of water, and drives a beam pivoted (12) from its periphery in a rocking motion. The beam multiplies the force applied to a piston (9) in a pump cylinder (15). One end of the cylinder is submerged in the lake. The crown of the piston has a flap valve (30,31) that opens as the piston is drawn down under the water and closes as the piston rises. The water is delivered from the top of the cylinder through a ball valve (25,26) in a cage (27), the valve opening as the piston rises and closing as the piston falls. The ball valve retains water in the outlet as the piston falls. ADVANTAGE - Simple mechanism that can raise large volumes of water, particularly for use in irrigation where there is no electricity.
