The tool shaft is used for measuring cutting forces and is constructed so that the active part of the tool is centred wrt the surfaces provided for indicator application. A stretch indicator is applied to the tool shaft symmetrically in relation to the cutting force engagement point. Indicator bridges are positioned so that a loading in the engagement point in an orthogonal direction gives an output signal in an indicator bridge. A rigidity matrix is taken from calibration and contains none terms. The tool shaft is modularly constructed. Different types of cutting tools can be fitted on the shaft since the tool holders are loose modules which are fitted on the tool shaft.
