A part (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7) of the column comprising the steering wheel (1) can move between a position of use and a retracted position in which the steering column occupies a reduced volume of the passenger compartment of the vehicle. The seat of the driver of the vehicle comprises a backrest, a part of which can move between a position of use and an inclined-forwards position. The steering column comprises connection means (16, 17, 19, 9, 12) connecting it to the movable part of the said backrest and allowing the displacement of the movable part (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7) of the steering column to be controlled by operating the movable part of the said backrest.
