PURPOSE:To prevent the spatter of a cathode in a DC type gas discharge luminous display device. CONSTITUTION:A cathode 12 is covered with a dielectric layer 15 so as not to be exposed to discharge space S, thereby attaining an intended purpose. An anode 22 is exposed to the discharge space S. When voltage is applied across the cathode 12 and the anode 22 for initiating discharge for luminous display, positively charged particles are accumulated on the layer 15 and internal voltage Vd is consequently generated in the layer 15. This internal voltage Vd acts in such a way as reducing voltage acting on discharge gas between the cathode 12 and the anode 22. Thus, the control of voltage applicable to the cathode 12 and the anode 22 for display may be complicated. Actually, however, the internal voltage Vd can be eliminated by neutralizing electrical charge accumulated in the layer 15, while raising voltage applicable to the cathode 12 above voltage applicable to the anode 22 after forming discharge for luminous display. |
