The hydraulic power station includes at least two production sets, each including a water turbine (20) driving an alternator (10). Some, e.g. 2 out of 4 generating sets incorporate a gas turbine (40), which becomes the prime mover when its reduction gear (36) output shaft is engaged (35) with a bevel gear (30) situated between the water turbine (20) and the alternator (10), the former being dewatered. Exhaust gases pass through a heat exchanger (50) supplying (51) a steam turbine coupled to an adjacent water-driven set, also by bevel gear. The gases then (60) heat the return flow of a district heating network (CAD) from 10 to 85 deg. C. Parallel heat recovery occurs in the steam turbine exhaust. Hot water storage may opt. be provided to help reconcile electrical and thermal system demand curves. Gases are finally discharged, for environmental reasons, within a turbine draft tube (69,70). ADVANTAGE - Capital outlay is minimised, esp. in catchments with low winter run-offs.
