[Also in Division G4] A valve assembly for use in a digital to analogue converter has a series of valves, the port areas of which form a binary progression. Each valve consists of a member 20 with closure members 21, 22, the position of the valve relative to the valve body 1 being adjustable by a screw 30. The valve body 1 is discshaped and has cavities 5, 7, 8 which are provided with stiffening members 9 and are connected with the inlet and outlet ports 4, 6. The valve body 1 is also provided with cylindrical channels in each of which are two stiffening rings 101 and end pieces 103, 104, clamped together by bolts. The lower end 29 of each valve stem is triangular in cross-section to centre it in the end piece 103. The upper end of the valve stem forms the core 40 of an electromagnet formed by a cylindrical sleeve 42 around which is an actuating coil. The sleeve 42 is made of a magnetic material apart from a non-magnetic ring 42<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 2 (not shown). The magnetic circuit is completed by a ring 46, external columns 48 and an end plate 49. In a second embodiment, Fig. 3b (not shown), the ring 46 is adjacent the core 40 at all times during its movement and the end plate 4a is spaced from the non-magnetic part of the sleeve by a larger magnetic end piece 41. This is stated to prevent magnetic saturation of the sleeve 42. The supply circuit for the actuating coils is described with reference to Fig. 6 (not shown). A switch which is controlled according to the corresponding binary digit is in series with a D.C. source and the coil. The latter is shunted by an adjustable resistor and a unidirectional diode. Adjusting the value of the resistor will vary the time lag of the corresponding valve, and so all the valves can be set to operate at the same moment.</p> |
