A ball joint comprises a housing 1 having an access opening 8 for the internal machining of the housing and a deflection opening 7 for receiving the shank 5 of the ball pivot, the axes of the openings being inclined to one another and the openings being formed so that during the assembly of the joint the pivot can be inserted shank-first into the access opening and then rotated to pass the shank out of the deflection opening. The housing contains a bearing shell 2 which may be of resiliently flexible material and may have a slit extension beyond the equator of the ball 4 pressed into contact with the ball by a wedge ring 10 loaded by cup springs 11. An annular insert 9 (Fig. 1, not shown) may be placed in the deflection opening to bear from inside the housing on a suitable housing shoulder. Specification 971,081 is referred to. |
