Incendiary gel for burning petroleum on liq. or solid substrates consists of a 90-98 pts. liq. phase (I), comprising solvent (II) and opt. anionic surfactant (III), and 2-10 pts. solid phase, comprising a suitable swelling agent (IV). The ignition process and primer compsns. are also claimed. USE/ADVANTAGE - The gel is used for igniting and burning off fresh oil films on solids or liq. substrates and incinerating aged petroleum, oil slicks and hardly flammable high-boiling petroleum fractions (claimed). The gel is suitable for burning oil discharged onto water and on land, regardless of whether the low boiling fractions have already evaporated or are still present. The reaction prods are harmless to nature and the environment and sink in water The primer used gives high flame temps. of 1900-2400 deg. C and floats on water for at least 3, pref. 10-20 sec. but heats the water only on the surface (to ca. 40-60 deg. C), avoiding damage to algae and marine life.
