The present specification relates to a portable device to enable a user to conveniently and accurately control a dimming mode of a device and a control method thereof. To that end, according to the disclosed embodiment of the present invention, the portable device includes the following: a flexible display unit; a measurement unit which measures at least one among the extended length and speed of the flexible display unit; a sensor unit which senses a user input; and a processor which controls the flexible display unit, measurement unit, and sensor unit. The portable device provides a dimming mode for dimming the flexible display unit if no user input is sensed within a predefined dimming time. The dimming mode includes a first dimming mode of which the predefined dimming time is the first dimming time and a second dimming mode of which the predefined dimming time is shorter than the first dimming time. The flexible display unit has a first state in which the flexible display unit is not extended and a second state in which the flexible display unit is extended. If the flexible display unit is contracted from the second state to the first state, the processor switches the mode of the portable device from the first dimming mode to the second dimming mode. If a predefined user input is sensed in the switched second dimming mode, the flexible display unit re-switches the mode of the portable device back to the first dimming mode. If no user input is sensed in the second predefined dimming mode, the flexible display unit dims the flexible display unit. |
