The rope (2) is fixed at one end to a drum (5) rotating in a tubular housing. It passes out through a lengthwise slot (6) in the latter. One half (3a) of the lock is mounted on the free end (2a) of the rope. This engages with the other half (3b), which is permanently fixed in the head (4a) of the housing (4). The drum can incorporate springs placed under tension when the rope is pulled out, and can be lockable in the housing.
