A spacecraft berthing mechanism (10) for coupling spacecraft is provided which has minimal effect on the maximum size an associated spacecraft hull (20) may have. The berthing mechanism (10) includes a flange member (12) which defines a hatchway and which is adapted for attachment to a spacecraft port (18). The flange member (12) has a forwardly facing interface surface (14) through which the hatchway passes and an outer peripheral surface extending rearwardly from the interface surface (14). The peripheral surface has a plurality of beveled portions (28A-28D) spaced substantially evenly about the peripheral surface. A plurality of alignment guides (34, 35) are arranged on the flange member (12) such that several of the alignment guides (34) are positioned adjacent one of the beveled portions (28A) and the remaining alignment guides (35) are positioned adjacent an opposing beveled portion (28C). |
