Nitriding of alumina is carried out at above 700 deg. C using CN radicals, pref. CN- or Cy radicals, esp. in a gaseous media in the presence of a hydrocarbon or a carbon cpd..Pref., the alumina is treated in the presence of a hydrocarbon or carbon cpd. (esp. acetonitrile or monomethylamine) in a gaseous medium contg. nitrogen (cpd.) and hydrogen (esp. NH3 in amount more than 50, esp. more than 85%), the hydrogen content being such that all the oxygen in the alumina reacts with the hydrogen to form water which reacts with the hydrocarbon or carbon to form CO and H2, the CO reacting with the nitrogen (cpd.) to form the CN radicals. The alumina is treated at 1000-1500 (esp. 1200-1400) deg. C, the NH3/Al2O3 molar ratio being greater than 1 (pref. greater than 1.6) and the C/Al2O3 molar ratio being 0.4-1.2.
