The gripper, which is on a frame mounted on the forks of a stacker truck, has a hook (8) that catches over an inside bead forming the rim of the drum. Pivoted (9,11) in a fixed housing (7) is a parallelogram linkage with lower arm (10) and upper arm whose extension is the lifting hook (8). The other two pivots (13,14) of the linkage are in a moving casing (12) into which the hook (8) recedes as the casing reaches its uppermost position. The gripper is engaged with the drum by lowering the hook onto the rim. When the gripper is raised the hook is trapped on the rim and the drum can be safely lifted. The hook is released by lowering the drum onto the floor and continuing to lower until the hook escapes from the rim into the moving casing. USE/ADVANTAGE - Simple design of drum gripper and lifter requiring no springs or hydraulic equipment. Emptied drums can be lowered without tipping over. Gripper is easily visible to driver.
