An automatic process for orientating, separating and positioning the individual wires of a cable has a handling tool (2) that has a carriage supported on a spring suspension (9) from a main housing block (3). The carriage has a motor (13) driven roller (12) that is set (14) a predetermined distance (16) above the surface of the workpiece (cable) carrier (1). The carrier has slots (14) sized to suit the diameters of the individual wires (11) of the cable. The carrier is vibrated in two directions while the upper roller is rotated. The wires are caused to spread and move into the slots to achieve the spacing necessary for a subsequent fixing operation. USE/ADVANTAGE - Automatic spacing of wires for fitting into connectors avoiding faulty or completely missed placements of leads. Prevents leads springing out of grooves of workpiece carrier. Copes with cables with various number of leads and diameters.
