The static converter comprises pref. a two pulse bridge circuit and has at least one switch device (2) comprising an inductance (2.1), an electronic switch (2.2), and a rectifying component (2.3), which is so connected that it can take over the current of the inductance (2.1) when the electronic switch (2.2) is switched off. The rectifying component (2.3) is furthermore connected to a capacitor (4) which is so charged with the current flowing through the rectifier component that it adds its own voltage to the output voltage of the rectifier. To the capacitor (4) is connected the required load network (6). The capacitor is also connected to a further switch device (3), comprising a smoothing throttle (3.1) and a semiconductor switch (3.2), so that from the capacitor a current through the rectifier (1), the smoothing throttle (3.1) and the semi-conductor switch (3.3) can be driven opposed to the mains voltage. USE/ADVANTAGE - To overcome the problem whereby the voltage of a DC mains cannot be adjusted smaller than the vertex value of the connected AC voltage.
