A sorting apparatus includes a plurality of bin trays arranged in a direction with clearances between adjacent ones to accommodate sheet materials; at least one sheet holder, movable in the direction, for holding and and discharging the sheet materials to the bin trays; a binding device for binding the sheet materials on the bin trays; wherein the binding device is movable in a first direction substantially parallel with the direction, and is movable in a second direction substantially perpendicular to the first direction between a first position for binding the sheet materials on a bin tray and a second position outside a moving path of the holder.
