A method is provided for salvaging organic thermoplastic values from discarded shaped organic thermoplastic substrate which has been surface treated with a protective or decorative organic or organosilicon coating. In a preferred method the discarded shaped organic thermoplastic substrate, such as a polycarbonate substrate, is granulated, treated with an aqueous alkaline solution which may contain a water miscible organic solvent, such as methanol, and thereafter washed until neutral and dried.
